about

Self-generating remixes of Arrington De Dionyso's stellar "Shouting Over Deep Water Blues" album, all created and realized using modular synthesizers playing themselves in reaction to the original music.

==BORING TECHNICAL DETAILS==
Each of these remixes was generated using the same core process: transform an edited iteration of the original piece through my modular synthesizer system and let the work generate itself. This was achieved using Ableton Live to edit the original works, usually consisting of creating new dynamics and manipulating the speed of the recording to generate impulse moments at new times, and the foundation of the Make Noise Shared System (original configuration) to process and generate.

Since the Shared System is designed for processing and creating timbres as much as it is a performance centered system, it was easy enough to send audio through and get results from the synth. Maths works beautifully as a comparator and follower, and using an extra Function module allowed for further signal generation from the source. The Phonogene and Echophon formed the memory of the machine, holding data and sound for indeterminate periods of time or effecting the signals to create new textures. A Bastl Cinnamon filter as well as a Make Noise FxdF provided basic sound sculpting and spectral choice/definition, with the rest of the system (and extra-system modules like clock generators and LFOs) providing the firmament upon which the works lie.

Sounds combine with reharmonized iterations and synthesized tones meant to emulate the ebb and flow of water, the metallic groaning of a hull scraping the reef; a new form of natural sounds created by synthetic interactions with hyper-real source materials. We are creating dialectics in real time, abandoning the antithesis as soon as thesis is restated.

Time becomes malleable and the actual physical space taken up by sound becomes without vertices as sounds remain firmly rooted as icebergs or as fleeting and prone to breakneck whip pans as a leaf in a waterspout.

Scylla & Charybdis can both get a bite to eat today.
